Workshop on “Building Materials in Architecture” begins at IUST

Awantipora, March 22: A 3-day workshop on “Building Materials in Architecture” organized by the Department of Architecture of the Islamic University of Science and Technology, kicked off here on Tuesday.

The Dean of Academic Affairs of IUST, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Malik, who was the chief guest for the occasion, deliberated on the importance of the workshop in light of contemporary challenges.

IUST Research Dean, Prof. AH Moon, in his keynote address, highlighted the importance of construction materials in the context of earthquake-prone Kashmir. Addressing the participants, the Registrar of IUST, Prof. Naseer Iqbal who was the guest of honor for the occasion, underlined the need to create strong industrial links between academia and industry, especially in the local context.

Renowned landscape architect and environmental planner Akshay Koul, gave a detailed presentation of his various projects which used different building materials thoughtfully. Assistant Professor of Architecture at JMI New Delhi Intekhab Alam, discussed the importance of indigenous building materials and techniques in the context of Ladakh and the wider Himalayan regions.

Other experts who spoke on the occasion included Professor AK Singh of SMVDU Katra, Somi Chatterjee and Owais Asif, a Delhi-based architect. They talked about various interesting and different aspects of the workshop theme.

Students and faculty from Department of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Polytechnic College and Kashmir School of Architecture at IUST, Safapora participated in the workshop.
