Shelbyville Family Remembers Funny, Affectionate Teenager Murdered In Front Of Laundromat | New
SHELBYVILLE, Tn. (WSMV) – The family of the murdered Shelbyville teenager outside a laundromat plead for justice as they mourn the death of 14-year-old Israel Diego-Pascual, whose brother is remembered as a funny and loving teenager.
A surveillance image from inside the Duck River laundry shows Israel hugging her mother minutes before he was shot outside.
“That last hug meant something special,” said Israel’s brother Adolfo Sebastian. “He whispered in her ear and said ‘I love you mom’ and she said ‘I love you too’, not knowing that this would be his last farewell.”
Shelbyville investigators identified Horatio Rice as the suspected killer and said Israel’s murder was a senseless case of mistaken identity. Sebastian and his family eagerly await Rice to be brought to justice.
“You never know who’s next,” Sebastian said. “He might shoot someone else. The same thing happened to us, it might happen to someone else.”
A vigil was held outside Duck River Laundry in memory of Israel, with people leaving flowers, balloons and candles. Israel loved basketball and video games, his family says. Sebastian cherishes a memory last month when Israel landed a 3-point shot in a game he had no idea he would play.
“That only game I had with him in a tournament, I will never forget it,” said Sebastian.
Crimestoppers and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are offering a reward for any information that could lead to Rice’s arrest. He is said to be traveling with his girlfriend Tiffany Taylor, who police say is a person of interest.
