Oscar Grant’s mother sees much of her own family’s 2009 tragedy on the set of Daunte Wright
The officer who shot Grant was later convicted of manslaughter and served 11 months in the county jail. The Grant family were upset with the “light sentence” after the jury failed to convict the officer of second degree murder, Johnson said.
Despite being 12 years apart, Johnson said the cases showed striking similarities. The two young men were loving fathers, she said.
Wright was a good and caring father to his almost 2-year-old son, Daunte Wright Jr., the child’s grandmother said.
Oscar was also devoted to his daughter, Johnson said. So much so that he put pink flags on his car windows when his fiancé found out the gender of their baby so that everyone would know he was going to have a girl.
“Oscar loved his daughter so much,” Johnson said, recalling being on the phone with him as he “combed his hair and told her the day before he died that they were going to see Chuck E. Cheese the next day and unfortunately his life was taken and he did not have this opportunity. “
Both cases involved video footage of the incidents and both resulted in the chief of police’s resignation, Johnson said.
“We can see that there is still a deep fear among many police officers … stereotypes of African Americans have caused them to fear African Americans, and instead of doing their job fearlessly, they are doing their job. work with fear and often claim the lives of African Americans and young brown men, ”she added.
