A 32-year-old man, Paul Ilegal, was in an Ile-Ife Magistrate’s Court in Osun on Wednesday for allegedly stealing building materials worth N204,000 from a building under construction.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offense in March 2022 in the Ooni Crown Land area on Ibadan Road, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said the defendant allegedly conspired with others currently at large to steal 16 packs of 60 by 60 tiles worth N96,000 and six bags of cement worth N24,000.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant also stole three cans of paint worth N15,000, 25 bags of broken tiles worth N50,000 and a pair of shoes worth N19,000 , owned by a certain Wale Adeosun.

Osanyintuyi said the defendant hid some of the stolen items inside the roof of the building.

He said the accused, after stealing the items, slept in one of the rooms in the unfinished building without the owner’s consent.

The Prosecutor argued that the offenses violated Articles 249(d), 383, 390(9), 413(1) and 516 of the Penal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to four counts of conspiracy, unlawful entry, theft and disturbing the public peace.

Defense lawyer Bukoye Fayemi requested the accused’s bail on the most liberal terms and promised that his client would not bail.

The Magistrate, OB Adediwura, granted the defendant bail in the amount of N300,000 along with bail of a similar amount.

Adediwura ordered that the surety be required to swear an affidavit of resources; reside within the jurisdiction of the court and present a three-year tax clearance.

It also specified that the guarantor, who must be a blood relative of the accused, must present his three recent identity photographs.

The case has been adjourned until June 3 for a hearing.
