MANISTEE – Spirit of the Woods Garden Club, Inc. partnered with the Armory Youth Project again this year to grow vegetables in the Armory Raised Gardens.
“The products we harvested served two purposes. Some of the products were used by young people in their cooking classes with Chef Al Frye at the Armory. They roasted zucchini and used tomatoes and cucumbers in salads. garden basil, ”one press release read. “The young people also used fresh herbs from the garden in their cooking class. One week, they made a mango salsa with cilantro from the garden.
All products not used in the weekly cooking class were donated to a local food bank; over 500 pounds of produce were delivered to seven different county food banks this year.
Students learned gardening from club members when they helped with planting, weeding and harvesting.
“We installed a drip irrigation system this year, to reduce the amount of water needed. Another improvement this year was to turn an area full of weeds near the raised beds into a small garden. of pollinators with mostly native plants and a stone puddle, ”according to the press release.
