Family still seeking answers in fatal Oakhurst hit and run crash
“It’s scary that someone has to tell young children that your uncle is no longer there,” said his sister Channa Hammond.
Eben never returned from Channa’s front door on the night of July 7. At midnight on the skateboard, no one expected a turn when the California Highway Patrol said the vehicle struck Eben from behind near Route 427 and Elliott Drive.
The driver fled immediately.
“I didn’t hold a grudge,” she said. “It never stopped. I never thought twice about it, almost the way I felt it.
Eben’s friend skating in front of him that night says the hit-and-run car took off so quickly on a pitch black night that they didn’t even have a chance to identify him. Eben died instantly.
“We were sitting there. Maybe they helped us or something, ”Channa said. “We were on the way to urgently needing help.”
Now his family wants to know who is behind the wheel.
“You don’t do it yourself to disappear into such a community,” said Eben sponsor Matt Skons. “Someone knows who it is and doesn’t tell anyone.”
Sconce launched GoFundMe We will award $ 10,000 to anyone who can provide information that may lead to the arrest of a fleeing driver.
On Tuesday evening, Eben’s relatives took candles through the streets of Oakhurst, shed light on unanswered questions and remembered a young man being taken too early.
“Piano. He was able to sing. He always performed at the Golden Chain Theater here. He was an artist,” Sconce said. “He was a light to everyone in the community.”
Currently, CHP says there is no information on suspicious vehicles yet. Officers said they sought help from investigators at CHP Fresno.
