Cheyenne Mountain baseball team honors the Collier family on Saturday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – The Cheyenne Mountain baseball team held a ceremony to honor the Collier family on Saturday after a fatal car crash last October killed Steve Collier and his two sons, Mason and Josh.
Steve Collier has coached at Wasson, Palmer and Widefield High Schools. He passed on his love of the game to his family, including his two sons Mason and Josh. Mason played for Palmer and Josh for Cheyenne Mountain.
On their way to the World Series in October 2020, they were killed in a car crash.
“It’s been very hard. There is a lot of pain and a lot of joy. A lot of celebration and a lot of emptiness,” said his wife Becky Collier.
Josh Cheyenne Mountain’s teammates wore badges on their uniforms on Saturday with his initials. His mother Becky and sister Emily were asked to pitch the first pitch before Cheyenne’s home game.
“I didn’t… I don’t know why I hadn’t done this before. My mom came out on the pitch and hangs out for a little while. I didn’t, so that’s my first time here. Being able to see all the players and everything, and being around them, it’s just… there are no words, ”said Emily.
“Once you play baseball in the community for any period of time, you are part of a big baseball family. There is tremendous solace in that,” Becky said.
