Qatar’s construction sector has maintained its growth momentum so far this year. The evolution of the issuance of building permits in the country indicates the strength of the construction sector. The total number of building permits issued reached 3,766 in the first five months of this year, according to data from the Planning and Statistics Authority.
Building permit data is important for measuring the economic expansion of an economy. The number of construction permits issued in the country is one of the important indicators of economic activity as it signals an expansion or contraction in the construction sector. Industry experts are watching developments in building permits closely, as any increase in emissions signals a recovery in the construction sector.
The number of building permits issued in April by municipalities in Qatar stood at 677, according to data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority. The number of construction permits issued in May by municipalities in Qatar stood at 645. According to geographical distribution, Al Rayyan municipality topped the list of municipalities with 167 permits issued (26% of total permits issued ), while Al Doha Municipality comes second with 166 permits, or 26%, followed by Al Wakrah Municipality with 136 permits, or 21%, then Al Da’ayen Municipality with 94 allowed, i.e. 15%.
The country recorded the issuance of 2,444 construction permits during the first quarter of this year, which represents an increase of about 13% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. During the fourth quarter of last year, which includes October, November and December, 2,159 building permits were issued according to the Planning and Statistics Authority.
In the first quarter, March saw the highest number of building permit issuances in the first quarter. The number of building permits issued in March by municipalities in Qatar reached 988, according to data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority. February witnessed a decline as 697 building permits were issued during that month, the lowest value of the quarter. The number of construction permits issued in January by municipalities in Qatar increased by 13% to 759, compared to the previous month.
Data on building permits and construction completion certificates are considered an indicator of the performance of the construction sector which, in turn, occupies an important place in the national economy.
Although it has faced several headwinds due to the coronavirus pandemic outbreak, Qatar’s construction sector has seen a strong rebound in 2021. No less than 9,500 building permits have been issued l ‘last year.
